A Special Court yesterday handed down nine years’ imprisonment to Shahriar Ahmed, son of former BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Ahmed, for committing three types of tax offences.
Judge Shamsunnahar of Fourth Special Court, set up on the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises, also fined him Tk 1.5 crore. In default of which, Shahriar, who is on the run, has to suffer a year and nine months more in prison.
The court also ordered to confiscate his property including 7.6 acres of land.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) Assistant Commissioner Nashid Rezwana Monir filed the case against Shahriar on November 22 for evading income tax of Tk 8.68 lakh by concealing information about his wealth of Tk 42.70 lakh in tax returns.
Shahriar was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for not submitting his tax return for fiscal year 2003-04, three years’ imprisonment for giving false information and another five years’ imprisonment for evading tax by concealing information in his tax return from fiscal years 2003-04 to 2006-07.
However, Shahriar has to serve out imprisonment of maximum five years as the court ordered to make the sentences effective concurrently.
The court also ordered to confiscate his properties including 7.6 acres of land in Jurain and 100 shares of United Re-rolling Steel Mills Ltd worth Tk 1 lakh.
Earlier this month, Tanvir, another son of Salahuddin was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in a tax evasion case.
