Road accidents kill 41 during Eid holidays

At least 41 people were killed and over 150 injured in separate road accidents in the capital and elsewhere in the country during the Eid vacation.

Seven, including three women, were killed in the capital. They are Shahid, 38, Shahnaz, 16, Taqdir, 17, Laizu, 22, Iqbal, 23, Khorsheda Akhter, 35, and Artiq Ullah, 23.

Shahid was killed when a bus knocked him down at Gulistan on Saturday. Shahnaz of Mymensingh was crushed under the wheels of a microbus at Joarshahara on Thursday.

Taqdir died on Eid day at Shyampur as a bus hit him, while another bus ran over Laizu of Barisal at Sadarghat on Thursday.

Iqbal, Atiq and Khorsheda were knocked down by separate buses in Khilgaon, on Airport Road on Wednesday, and in Old Dhaka on Saturday.

SIRAJGANJ
At least 12 people were killed and 45 injured in separate road accidents on Thursday and Saturday, reports our Sirajganj correspondent.

At least eight were killed and 35 others were injured when a Kushtia-bound truck with around 70 passengers skidded off the road at Simantabazar Swalpo Mahmudpur in Sirajganj on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a bus and a truck collided head-on in Sayedabad on Dhaka-Bogra Highway killing two unidentified people and injuring 10. Another unidentified person of about 32 died as a bus hit him in Datiadighor on the same way in Raiganj upazila the same day.

Eight-year-old Nayeem was crushed under the wheels of a truck in Talgachhi on Bogra-Nagarbari highway on Saturday.

The injured were committed to Sirajganj General Hospital, Bogra Mohammad Ali Hospital and other local clinics.

BOGRA
At least five people were killed and 10 injured in road accidents in the district, says our Bogra correspondent.

The dead are Mohammad Selim Reza, 35, businessman Shahidul Islam Sagar, 32, Shihab, 25, motorcyclist Wazid Ali, 60, and his son Mominul Islam, 19.

Police said three were killed when a Gaibandha-bound bus slammed into an electric pole. Wazid and his son Mominul were killed when a speeding three-wheeler hit them.

KURIGRAM
Motorcyclist Nur Amin, 17, son of Amir Uddin of Harisum village, was run over by a picnic bus at Sadar upazila in the district, says our Kurigram correspondent.

DINAJPUR
Our Dinajpur correspondent adds: Two bicyclists — Abu Shahadat Suman, 18, son of Farukur Rahman, and Shahidul Islam, 20, son of Mohammad Babul, of Gatpara village — were killed when a speeding truck hit them at Birampur upazila in the district.

MYMENSINGH
At least three were killed and 25 others injured when a truck skidded off the road on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Churkhai on Saturday, says our Mymensingh correspondent.

One of the victims was Shaheb Ali, 60, while identities of the others could not be known immediately. Of the injured, 22 were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

In another accident, a minor girl — Sonia, 8, daughter of Ratan Mia — was killed as a pick-up van ran over her at Major Vita in the municipality area on Wednesday.

JAMALPUR
Three people were killed and 10 injured when a bus careered across the road and fell into a roadside ditch from the Jheni Bridge on Thursday, reports our Jamalpur correspondent.

Police said the Madarganj-bound bus from the district headquarters smashed down the railing of the bridge and tumbled into the 20-foot-below ditch.

GOPALGANJ
Three people died and 30 suffered injuries in a road accident in Kashiani upazila on Wednesday, reports our Gopalganj correspondent.

Witnesses said the accident occurred at noon when speeding three-wheeler Nasimon collided with a bus at Gorakhola on Dhaka-Khulna highway.

The victims are bus labourer Halim Kazi, 25, Nasimon driver Abdur Rahman, 35, and helper Zakir Hossain, 30.

CHITTAGONG
One person died and nine others were injured when a night coach of Al-Amin Transport skidded off the road into a ditch around 5:00am, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

A minor girl — Jahanara, 6, daughter of Babul Chand — died when a human-hauler knocked her down at Bayezid Bostami in the city around 10:00pm on Saturday.

SYLHET
Two people were killed in separate road accidents in Bianibazar upazila on Wednesday, writes our Sylhet correspondent.

Abdul Khalek, 40, of Boro Shaleswar village was killed as a bus ran over him in front of Sheola Palli Bidyut Sub Station.

Hasan Ahmed, 25, died on the spot when a bus rammed his motorcycle from behind in Baroigram village.
