The cold wave sweeping through 16 northern districts has crippled normal life for the last few days.
Over 1,000 people mostly children and elderly persons have fallen victim to cold related diseases in the last three days in the region, reports our Sirajganj correspondent.
Bogra Met Office sources said the cold wave might intensify in mid-January.
Dense fog has severely disrupted vehicular movement in most of the northern districts including Sirajganj, Naogaon, Pabna, Natore and Rajshahi forcing the drivers to drive vehicles with the headlights on in daytime.
Sources said cold related diseases like pneumonia, asthma and influenza have broken out in the northern part as about 1,000 patients were admitted to different hospitals, health complexes and clinics in the region.
Farmers fear that if the cold wave continues for a few more days it might cause severe damage to potato plants and Boro seedlings.
People of low income in northern districts including Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Dinajpur, Sirajganj, Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Pabna, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Joypurhat, Bogra, Rangpur, Naogaon and Natore are suffering badly as the cold spell has been lashing the region for the last few days.
Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Khalil said they have started distributing warm clothes among the destitute.
Meanwhile, road and river communications between Dhaka and 16 south and south-western districts remained snapped for hours yesterday as ferry and launch movement on Paturia-Daulatdia channel was suspended for seven hours due to dense fog, reports our Manikganj correspondent.
Hundreds of vehicles got stranded at both Paturia and Daulatdia ferry terminals causing chaos among thousands of passengers.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Assistant General Manager Bidyut Kumar Saha told The Daily Star that the service was suspended twice from 11:30pm to 2:00 am and 3:30am to 8:00am.
About 100 people suffering from cold related diseases have been admitted to different hospitals in Nilphamari, reports our Nilphamari correspondent.
Some of them are in a critical condition, sources said.
District Relief Office sources said apart from warm clothes about 1200 blankets would be distributed among the destitute.
