Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam yesterday attributed the present rice crisis to lack of coordination between demand and supply and lake of confidence among the traders.

“Lack of coordination between supply and demand and lack of confidence among the traders are the main reasons for the present scenario of the rice crisis,” he told reporters after addressing the launching ceremony of NBR Citizen Charter.

The adviser however added that supply of rice has increased and the retail price is now “stable”.

He told a questioner that the government is trying its best both domestically and internationally to get rid of the economic crisis facing the country.

Earlier, addressing the NBR function, Aziz asked the officials to implement tax related laws without discrimination. Otherwise, it will give rise to corruption.

“You are to implement all laws and rules uniformly to avoid any sort of corruption,” he said.

The finance adviser directed the NBR officials to act in a manner that will foster business and trade friendly. “Otherwise, it will create obstacle to overall macro-economic position of the country,” he said.

Describing corruption by a section of NBR officials as a major obstacle to investment and employment, Aziz said this will not bring anything good for the country.

He termed the tax system of the country “progressive” and said the aim of this system is to reduce income gap among the people.

About the Citizen Charter, the adviser said it is a good initiative. But success of it lies in effective coordination of the service taker and the service provider.

“It seems to me that most of the people of this country are honest and want to lead a honest living,” he added.
