Leaders of Awami League (AL) and BNP yesterday expressed their hope that the newly appointed advisers would concentrate on implementing the electoral roadmap and ending crises of food and price hike of essentials.
They said this while giving their reaction to the appointment of five new advisers–AF Hassan Ariff, AMM Shawkat Ali, Maj Gen (retd) Ghulam Quader, Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, Rasheda K Choudhury–to the caretaker government yesterday.
“We hope the advisers would try to implement the electoral roadmap and end the crises prevailing in the country while maintaining the non-partisan and neutral spirit of the caretaker government,” AL Presidium Member Tofail Ahmed told The Daily Star.
Terming the new advisers experienced, BNP Standing Committee Member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said they hope the advisers would help the government face the challenges before it and fulfil the government’s pledges to the people including the holding of a free and fair election.
“I hope the government will take quick steps to end the current crises of food, fertiliser and power and put a leash on the soaring prices of essentials while implementing the electoral roadmap,” said Mahbub, a former army chief.
Jatiya Party (Manju) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju, now in the US, hoped the newly appointed advisers would take the country forward. Giving his reaction on the resignation of four advisers on Tuesday, Manju said a number of the advisers became vindictive and misused their power. Their activities embarrassed the government and for this they were forced to resign, he said over telephone.
Workers’ Party at a meeting yesterday demanded that the government hands over power to an elected government by holding a free and fair election as soon as possible. Chaired by Workers’ Party President Rashed Khan Menon, the meeting also termed the resignation of the four advisers “a result of current economic crisis”.
Left Democratic Alliance at a meeting yesterday said resignation of advisers or induction of new advisers into the caretaker government would bring no solution to the current crises if the government does not change its way of running the country.
In a statement they also urged the government to investigate the allegations brought against the advisers who resigned on Tuesday.
Chaired by Saiful Haque, the meeting also demanded lifting of the state of emergency and the ban on political activities to ensure people’s democratic rights.
Coordinator of Samajtantrik Dal of Bangladesh (BSD) Comrade Khalequzzaman in a statement said the government has to change its ways rather than having advisers resigned or having new advisers sworn in.
