Detectives in separate drives in the city and Munshiganj yesterday arrested four members of the gang that looted Dhanmondi branch of Brac Bank and seized 191 tolas of gold ornaments, diamonds and other valuables from them.
The DB team arrested three of the gang in Munsiganj and recovered 141 tolas of gold ornaments, 13 tolas of silver ornaments, two diamond rings, a diamond piece, a gold made wristwatch and Tk 3 lakh earned from selling gold from their possession.
In a separate raid, DB police picked up another gang member Maher Ali, owner of a shoe shop at Gulistan, from his shop. They later raided his Mirpur house and recovered another 50 tolas of gold ornaments.
They arrestees are Raja, Majnu and his sister Moina. Raja admitted to his involvement in the heist and said his responsibility was to brake open the lockers.
Twenty duplicate keys, a hacksaw blade, an electric drill machines, three mobile phone sets and several other equipment for breaking the lockers and cutting the ceiling were also recovered.
The police first detected one gang member tracking down his mobile phone. The gang members bought 10 SIMs of a mobile operator 15 days before they finally launched the operation at the bank.
A team of the Detective Branch of police raided Putfimari village of Shreenagar upazila in Munsiganj in the early hours and arrested the three.
Inspector Mahbubur Rahman, who was one of the members of the DB team, said the gang members took 37 days to accomplish the operation successfully. Police said 10 members of an organised gang of robbers were involved in the robbery.
