Students of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday continued their demonstrations on the campus demanding unconditional release of the detained university teachers and a student.
‘Students against repression’, formed mainly by the left-leaning student organisations, brought out a silent procession from Aparajeyo Bangla at 11:00am and paraded the campus.
About 1,000 students along with the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), participated in it.
No classes were held at the Arts Building and the Curzon Hall following a two-hour class abstention programme.
However, a few classes were held in the Business Studies Faculty with a small number of students.
Another group of students belonging to the “Students against repression” brought out a silent procession at the Curzon Hall.
Later, they gathered at Doyel Chattar intersection and formed a human chain creating traffic jam in the area.
DU students under the banner of ‘Chhatra Bandhu’ brought out another procession which ended in front of the Central Library after marching different streets on the campus.
At a press conference at Madhu’s Canteen at around 1:00pm, a group of university students threatened to go on a hunger strike till death if the detained teachers and a student are not released within next three days.
The speakers said a vested group has been trying to create a rift among the groups staging demonstrations.
‘Students against repression’ will observe a two-hour class abstention from 11:00am to 1:00pm and hold a protest rally on the campus today.
Leaders of the organisation said they would go for tougher programmes if their demand is not met immediately.
JCD leaders and activists, led by its senior Vice president Mamun-or-Rashid, met Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz and demanded immediate release of the detained university teachers and the student.
They also urged the VC to take necessary steps to get the names of Karim Sarker and Golam Azam Khomeni dropped from the charge sheet in a case filed for torching an army car at Shahbagh intersection in August last year.
Meanwhile, DU VC Prof Faiz said he had met President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday and discussed the matter with him.
He said he would meet the chief adviser today and discuss the overall situation.
Faiz also hoped that the detained teachers and students would be released soon.
A number of DU teachers continued wearing black ribbons demanding release of their detained colleagues and a student.
RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY
Teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday formed a human chain on the campus demanding immediate release of the 10 convicted RU students and the detained DU teachers and a student, reports our RU Correspondent.
The recently freed RU teachers also participated in the human chain in front of the central library.
They also demanded that the government must withdraw the cases against both the RU and DU students.
“It’s gross violation of human rights to keep the university teachers and students in jail”, renowned writer Prof Hassan Azizul Haque told the reporters.
He said the government should take necessary steps for immediate release of the detained DU teachers and students and 10 convicted RU students.
“If they are not released immediately the country might face a big crisis again,” he said.
Former RU vice chancellor Prof Abdul Khalek said the detained DU teachers and students and 10 convicted RU students must be released immediately to ensure a congenial academic atmosphere on the university. He urged the teachers and students to continue the programmes until they are released.
Economist Prof Sanat Kumar Saha, former Business Faculty dean Abdul Mazid, Prof Mizan Uddin, Prof Jalal Uddin, and Prof Zanaatul Ferdous, among others, were present.
Meanwhile, 10 representatives of general students met RU Vice chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain at his office and handed over a memorandum to him demanding release of the 10 convicted students and an employee.
They also demanded withdrawal of the case filed by RU authorities against the students for their involvement in violent incidents on RU campus on August 23.
They mentioned that if the university authorities fail to meet their demands, they would take tougher programmes.

A Rajshahi court on December 12 last year acquitted two RU teachers and an officer, but convicted 10 students and a RU employee in a case filed for torching a DGFI vehicle.
They each were sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000.
