Sector Commanders’ Forum has announced fresh date for holding the convention of freedom fighters in the capital to mobilise public support for its demand for trial of the war criminals.
The convention will now take place on March 15, 2008, if it gets permission from the government.
In addition, leaders of the forum will visit five divisions of the country to build public opinion against the war criminals.
A platform of the sector commanders of the Liberation War, the forum took the decision at a meeting at its Banani head office on January 10.
On December 10, 2007, the Sector Commanders’ Forum postponed the convention scheduled for December 13, 2007, as they did not get the government nod.
The forum leaders will visit Khulna on January 17, Rajshahi on January 26, Barisal on February 2, Chittagong on February 16 and Sylhet on February 23 as part of the initiative.
Besides, the forum would also visit Mymensingh on February 9.
During their visit, they will hold meetings and exchange views with pro-liberation war socio-cultural organisations, freedom fighters, teachers, students, religious leaders, and journalists.
Retired Air Vice Marshal AK Khandakar, deputy chief of the liberation forces, Maj Gen (retd) AKM Shafiullah, commander of sector-11, Lt Gen (retd) Mir Shawkat Ali, commander of sector-5, Lt Col (retd) Kazi Nuruzzaman, commander of sector-7, Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta, commander of sector-4, Lt Gen (retd) Harun-ur-Rashid, former army chief, Dr Sarwar Ali, Akku Chowdhury, among others, were present at the meeting.
Since its inception on October 2007, the Sector Commanders’ Forum has been vocal in their demand to bar ‘anti-independence’ forces such as Jamaat-e-Islami from national elections and to hold trial of leaders of Jamaat and other forces that had committed crimes against humanity while opposing the Liberation War of the country.
At the meeting, the forum also expressed grave concern at the soaring prices of the essentials.
They expressed hope that the government would tackle the situation and mitigate the sufferings of the poor people.
