Detectives and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel recovered the body with the head chopped off of Dr Mofakkharul Ahmed, registrar of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, from Gaibandha yesterday, eight days into his missing.
The DB and Rab personnel have so far arrested four people in connection with the killing. They are victim’s driver Saiful Islam, 24, Saiful’s cousin Firoj, 25, Bulu, 30, and Md Shahin, 25.
Firoj, Saiful and Shahin were arrested in the city’s Dhanmondi area yesterday while Bulu was arrested in Gaibandha.
Following their confessions, the law enforcers recovered the body of Mofakkharul Ahmed from a canal at Shimultoli village and the head from a farmland.
During preliminary interrogation by the law enforcers, all the arrestees admitted to their involvement in the murder.
Firoj and Saiful said they stabbed Mofakkharul to death at midnight on January 10 at Mofakkharul’s West Dhanmondi residence. After the killing, they took the body to the bathroom where they cut it into several pieces.
They kept the pieces into a sack and took it to Gaibandha by a passenger bus in the morning of January 11.
Firoj said driver Saiful had been looking for an opportunity to kill Mofakkharul as he was angry with Mofakkharul due to his misbehaviour.
But, the DB personnel said they are trying to unearth the real motive behind the brutal murder.
Mofakkharul Ahmed, along with Saiful and two other employees, had been residing at their West Dhanmondi residence, as all other members of his family were staying abroad.
