A Dhaka court yesterday ordered attachment of property of former Awami League lawmaker Sheikh Helaluddin and his wife Rupa Chowdhury in a case filed for handing in false wealth statements and building up assets through illegal means.

Meantime, the same court directed the authorities concerned to publish advertisements in two Bangla dailies asking former Power Development Board (PDB) chairman Noor Uddin Mahmud Kamal and five other people to surrender in a case filed for Tk 3 crore graft in setting up a barge-mount power plant in Khulna.

HELAL CASE

Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque at Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed the attachment order after receiving report on the arrest warrants the court issued against the couple earlier.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Helal and Rupa with Ramna Police Station on September 24 last year on charges of concealing Tk 7.60 crore in their wealth statements and amassing Tk 16.22 crore through illegal means.

On January 15, ACC Assistant Director Syed Ahmed, who is also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted charge sheet against the two to chief metropolitan magistrate’s court, showing 23 people as prosecution witnesses.

BARGE-MOUNT POWER

PLANT CASE

The court told the relevant authorities to publish advertisements in newspapers after different police stations submitted reports on attachment of property of six of the accused, including ex-PDB boss Kamal, which the court ordered last week.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, now behind bars, is also an accused in the case.

The five others, whose names will appear in the advertisements, are Aziz Khan, managing director of Summit Industries and Mercantile Corporation Private Ltd, its director Farid Khan, United Group Chairman Hasan Mahmud Raja, its Director Abul Kalam Azad and curator of Bangabandhu Memorial Trust (BMT), Sayed Siddiqur Rahman.

ACC Deputy Director Sabbir Hasan lodged the case with Tejgaon Police Station on September 2 last year; the watchdog’s Deputy Director Morshed Alam, also the IO, submitted charge sheet to Dhaka’s chief metropolitan magistrate’s court on January 10 this year.

Seven people were accused of corruption in the first information report (FIR), but the name of BMT curator Sayed Siddiqur Rahman was included in the charge sheet after investigators found his involvement in the offence.

One year of this caretaker government, has caught almost the majority of the politicians under corruption charges but yet to be found guilty. But my question is when will this government get those civil servants who are really corrupted in their departments.
The citizens of Bangladesh has suffered daily in their lives with the department of civil services as Police Station, Union Porishods, Land Registration, Magistrate Courts and many other departments which only works with bribery. It is known fact for the citizens of the country that the Caretaker Government ignoring since took power.
