Former BNP lawmaker and General Secretary of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal was arrested at his Lalmatia residence in the capital yesterday.

Mohammadpur police arrested Alal, former MP from Barisal-2 constituency, at 1/6, Lucky Apartments at about 8:30am on charge of violating the Emergency Powers Rules (EPR).

ABM Siddique, second officer of Mohammadpur Police Station, produced Alal in the Court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate in the afternoon and prayed for a three-day remand. But the court granted two days’ remand.

The police officer said Alal has been kept at Cantonment Police Station on security grounds and will be quizzed.

The BNP leader was an accused of attacking BNP Standing Committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman in front of the Zia’s grave and granted bail from the High Court.

Meanwhile, 122 former BNP lawmakers in a press statement yesterday demanded immediate release of detained BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, her adviser Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, and Jubo Dal General Secretary Moazzem Hossain Alal.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, acting office secretary of the BNP, yesterday protested the arrest of Alal and demanded his unconditional release.
