A Dhaka court yesterday rejected bail petition of detained former deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu in connection with the August 21 grenade attack case.
Meantime, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) pressed charges against former Public Service Commission (PSC) member Prof Mahfuzur Rahman in a case filed against him for concealing wealth information and amassing assets through illegal means.
Besides, arrest warrants against Basundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan Shah Alam and one of his accomplices were issued in the case filed against them for grabbing public properties in the city’s Baridhara area.
AUGUST 21 GRENADE ATTACK
Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order following a criminal appeal filed by Pintu’s lawyers against bail rejection order of the lower court.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court on January 22 rejected Pintu’s bail after he was produced before the court on expiry of his three-day remand.
Moving the bail petition, Pintu’s lawyers told the court that their client was implicated in the case as part of a conspiracy to harass him, as his name was not included in the FIR (first information report). He was shown arrested in the case on the basis of a false allegation, they added.
Opposing the bail petition, prosecution told the court that Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan, in his confessional statement on November 1 last year, disclosed Pintu’s involvement in the incident.
But Pintu who was in the dock yesterday, told the court that he was minister in charge of Faridpur district when the law enforcers arrested Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan in connection with the case.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected his bail petition.
Members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the BNP leader at his wife’s government residence at Motijheel in the city on January 18.
Five other Huji men had earlier given confessional statements to magistrates.
The grenade attack on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city on August 21, 2004 left 24 AL men dead and scores injured.
MAHFUZ CASE
ACC Assistant Director Nasir Uddin Ahmed, who is also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Mahfuz to the CMM’s Court, showing 23 people as prosecution witnesses.
The IO prayed for issuance of arrest warrant against him and the court order to attach his properties as he has been absconding since the case was filed against him.
On September 23 last year, ACC Assistant Director Helal Uddin Sharif filed the case with Kafrul Police Station against Mahfuz.
In the case statement, the complainant mentioned that Mahfuz had concealed Tk 4,95,89,897 in his wealth report submitted to the ACC and amassed Tk 1,67,78,345 through illegal means.
BASUNDHARA GROUP CASE
After scrutinising the case docket and other relevant documents, Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Uddin accepted the charge sheet of the case and issued arrest warrants against Shah Alam and Abu Sufian as they have been absconding since filing of the case.
On February 4, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sohrab Hossain, who is also the IO of the case, submitted a charge sheet against Shah Alam and three others to CMM’s Court, Dhaka.
Shamsuddin Ahmed and Engineer Abul Kalam Shamim are now in jail custody.
The IO prayed for issuance of arrest warrants against Shah Alam and Abu Sufian and the order to attach their properties.
According to the prosecution, Shah Alam and others grabbed 80 acres of public property at Baridhara in the city’s Badda area. DB Inspector Salahuddin filed the case against Shah Alam and three others with Badda Police Station on June 7 last year.
