A special court yesterday sentenced Awami League leader and former chief whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah to 13 years’ imprisonment for concealing information in wealth statement submitted to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) and amassing wealth illegally.
The court also fined absconding Hasnat, former premier and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s cousin, Tk 20 lakh in default of which he would have to stay in jail two more years.
The court sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment for amassing wealth illegally and three years’ imprisonment for concealing information in the wealth statement submitted to the ACC.
He would have to serve the whole 13 years in jail since Judge Arifur Rahman of the Special Court-10, set up at the MP hostel of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, ordered the sentences to run consecutively.
Another special court on December 12 sentenced Hasnat to nine years’ imprisonment on charges of tax evasion.
The sentences will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender, the verdict said. The court also ordered confiscation of his properties worth over Tk 1 crore.

ACC Assistant Director Rahela Khatun filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station on September 6 last year accusing Hasnat of acquiring assets worth Tk 1.6 crore beyond his known sources of income and concealing information about his wealth worth Tk 52 lakh.
On January 16, ACC Assistant Director Shafiul Alam, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Hasnat before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
Earlier, a Dhaka court ordered the attachment of Hasnat’s properties and issued an arrest warrant against him as he has been on the run since the case was filed.
