Download PDF Awami League (AL) General Secretary Abdul Jalil yesterday underwent a shunt operation for kidney dialysis at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
Jalil was in good condition after the operation conducted on his left hand, said AL leader’s personal physician and chief cardiologist of LabAid Cardiac Hospital Dr Matiur Rahman, who talked to the AL leader over phone.
Doctors under the supervision of Dr Akira Wu, a consultant nephrologist, and Dr Philip Koh, a cardiologist, at the hospital conducted the operation in the evening.
The hemo-kidney dialysis would begin immediately after the wounds in his hand heal, said Dr Matiur.
He said Jalil still has breathing problems. Besides, his hands and legs remain swollen, which would become normal after dialysis begins.
Dr Matiur said the ailing AL general secretary inquired about the issue of sending AL President Sheikh Hasina abroad for better treatment.
Earlier, doctors at the hospital decided to go for his kidney dialysis, saying that kidney transplant would be highly risky for him.
The AL leader, accompanied by his wife Rehana Jalil, left for Singapore for treatment on Tuesday after being released on a 30-day parole on Monday night.
Jalil has long been suffering from heart and kidney problems compounded by diabetes. Joint forces arrested him from his Mercantile Bank office at Motijheel in the capital on May 28 last year. He had been detained under Special Powers Act for over six months.
A case was filed against him on December 18 for concealing information in his wealth statement, but there has been little progress in the investigation.
