2 more lynched in Gazipur

Villagers beat two cattle thieves to death and injured five others in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district on Thursday night.

The dead were identified as Mohammad Julhas, 28, and Anwar Hossain, 32. The injured are Saidur Rahman, 25, Mohammad Anwar, 25, Mobarak, 28, Shahin Mollah, 32, and Motahar Hossain, 60.

Police and locals said the gang came to Sungun village on the bank of the river Shitalakkhy in a trawler and tried to steal cattle from the house of Nizamuddin.

As Nizamuddin cried for help, the neighbours came out of their houses and chased the gang.

When the thieves were fleeing by the trawler, the villagers with the help of police posted at Singhashi outpost chased the gang members with trawlers and engine boats and managed to catch hold of them in Boromi area.

They (villagers) beat up the thieves, killing Julhas and Anwar on the spot and injuring five others.

With the death of the two, lynching death toll of muggers and thieves in different parts of the country last week rose to eight.

In a meeting of the Committee on Law and Order on Thursday, the rising incidents of murder in the country came up for discussion.

The meeting expressed concern over the incidents of murder and directed the law enforcement agencies to take up the issue seriously.
