The Election Commission (EC) has directed the field-level election offices to begin publishing the draft voter lists for the areas where voter registration is completed.

It has also instructed the officials concerned not to worry much about minor mistakes, and instead concentrate on deleting fake or duplicate names from the draft while including those who had missed to be on the list, said sources at the commission.

On completion of enumeration in 93 upazilas, the army personnel have already started handing over prints of draft voter rolls to the district election officers.

If everything goes according to the EC’s plan, final voter lists for those upazilas would be ready by May, EC Secretariat officials said adding that by this time voter registration would be over in a few more upazilas.

The district election officers will scrutinise and publish draft voter lists gradually in city corporations, municipalities, upazilas, thanas and union parishads within 4/5 days on receipt of the printed copies, says a circular issued by the EC Secretariat Sunday.

Dispatched to all officials concerned, the circular gives a schedule to follow in the process till publication of the final roll in accordance with the electoral rolls rules.

Once the draft list is unveiled, it will be on public display for 15 days at the offices of district and upazila election officers or assistant registration officers, union parishad, municipality, ward, and cantonment boards and polling stations used as voter registration centres.

Voters can file objections and claims, if they have any, or ask for correction of mistakes within those 15 days. The revising authorities will dispose of those within 14/15 days since the closing day for the voters to submit their application.

Decisions regarding the claims, complaints and objections will have to be incorporated within 10 days of their resolution and the final roll will be published by the next 12 days.

According to EC decisions, upazila executive officers will do the revision work in upazilas while deputy election commissioners, additional deputy commissioners, additional district magistrates and cantonment executive officers will revise the lists in metropolitan and cantonment areas.

This time the commission is laying great stress on giving a chance to those who had earlier failed to be registered as voters.

“We have asked the district election offices and revising authorities not to bother about slip-ups. Since there would be photographs, voters won’t have trouble casting votes for minor problems,” observed a senior official at the EC Secretariat.

The draft voter lists for four city corporations and seven municipalities have already been published and the final ones for those areas would be ready on March 24.

The EC began the field level task of voter list with photographs in August last year and the final electoral register would be published by October, according to the electoral roadmap announced by the commission on July 15 last year.
