The treatment of the ears and eyes of detained Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina finally started at the city’s Square Hospitals where she has been undergoing treatment since March 11.
Echo test was performed on Hasina’s ears yesterday as a primary step and several other tests would be carried out today, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prisons Major Shamsul Haider Siddiqui told reporters at the hospital.
He went to visit Hasina at the hospital at about 5:00pm and stayed there for about an hour and enquired about Hasina’s health.
Hasina, a former prime minister and the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been detained since July 16 last year.
Coming out of the hospital, Maj Haider told reporters that ultra-sonogram was performed on Hasina at the hospital, the report of which would be available today.
He said, “Partial treatment in Sheikh Hasina’s eyes has been started. A few tests of her ears and eyes will be done tomorrow [today].”
Three doctors of the hospital–Dr Shah Alam, Dr Ziaul Haque and Dr Salma–examined Hasina yesterday, Haider added.
The AL has long been asking the government to send Hasina to the US for the treatment in her ears. Hasina’s hearing was badly damaged by the gruesome grenade attack on an AL rally on August 21, 2004.
