Doctors at Square Hospital found severe hearing problems of detained Awami League President Sheikh Hasina after doing several medical tests.
Hasina has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since March 11.
“We have found problems in both of her ears after doing different tests,” said Dr Sarwar-e-Alam during a press conference at the hospital yesterday. He said she has problems in her eyes as well.
He said the medical team formed at the hospital to examine Hasina’s health would make formal recommendations about her health to the jail authorities on Sunday. The recommendations would be made final after doing some more medical tests today and tomorrow, he added.
Hasina, a former prime minister, has been detained since July 16 last year.
Asked if the treatment for her hearing problems can be done in the country, Dr Sarwar did not reply.
Dr Ziaul Haque and Dr Mirza Nazim Uddin were also present at the press conference.
Dr Sarwar said Hasina’s allergy issues are under control, her blood pressure is normal now. He said they had an ultra-sonogram done on her, an echo test of heart and some blood tests.
“After getting all medical reports in hand, we would be able to say about her overall health condition,” the doctor said.
Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Major Shamsul Haider Siddiqui yesterday said the authorities would decide on Hasina after receiving the formal recommendations of her doctors.
Asked if she would be sent abroad if doctors recommended, he said everything is depending on the doctors’ recommendations. “First their recommendations have to be in our hands, we will decide afterwards,” said Maj Haider.
