Final voter lists for four city corporations and seven municipalities are scheduled to be published tomorrow, while the final lists for another 230 upazilas are likely to be published by the end of June.
The Bangladesh Army plans to finish printing the draft voter lists for the 230 upazilas by the end of May, printing of which will shift to full throttle in the next month in a bid to ensure the publication of final lists in June.
“Printing of draft voter lists for 100 upazilas will be completed by April and for another 130 upazilas by May,” said an official plan of the central control room under the army headquarters, which has been working as an interface between the armed forces’ members engaged in voter listing and the Election Commission (EC).
“In addition to the central control room, printing of draft voter lists will also begin at seven other places across the country in April,” Maj Ferdous Hasan Selim said yesterday in a news briefing at the army headquarters officers’ mess in the capital.
“A team from each district is currently being trained in printing at the central control room to expedite the job,” said Maj Ferdous.
Draft voter lists for 32 upazilas are currently being printed at the central control room. On completion of their printing, the army will hand over the lists to the EC, so it can publish the drafts to finalise those according to the electoral protocol.
Printing of the final voter lists for the four city corporations and seven municipalities is almost completed, making them ready to be published tomorrow through district election offices, according to the EC schedule.
The EC also already directed the field level election offices to start publishing area wise draft voter lists on receiving the printed version of them from the army, allowing prospective voters to inspect those and find out whether there is any ground for objections.
So the final voter lists for some of the 230 upazilas will be ready in April, for some others those will be ready in May, and the remaining upazilas will have their final voter lists ready in June, according to the plans of the EC and the army.
The field level work of preparing the national voter list with photographs began in August of last year and the final voter list is scheduled to be ready by the end of October this year for holding the long stalled ninth parliamentary election by the year end.
According to the present EC schedule for voter registration, the field level work for it is supposed to be completed by mid-July. Till March 18, a total of 4.81 crore voters were registered.
About the steps of finalising the area wise voter lists, the army officials yesterday said it requires about two months to print a draft voter list after registration is completed in an area, requiring about another two months for publishing the draft list and finally the final voter list.
Talking to reporters, the army officers said they found rare instances of duplications on the voter lists with photographs.
“Through biometric matching, we found only seven duplicates on the draft voter list prepared for Barisal City Corporation registering 2.18 lakh voters,” an army officer said at the central control room where several groups of army personnel are working to detect duplications on the lists.
AREA WISE FINAL VOTER LISTS
According to the EC schedule, final voter lists with photographs for city corporations of Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet, and for the municipalities of Manikganj, Shariatpur, Sreepur of Gazipur, Fulbaria of Mymensingh, Sitakunda, Cox’s Bazar, and Golapganj of Sylhet are scheduled to be published tomorrow.
The EC published draft voter lists for the areas on February 18, asking people to inspect the draft lists to file objections and claims if they have any.
The army handed over the draft electoral rolls for the areas to the EC on February 5.
Elections to the four city corporations and seven municipalities are supposed to be held by the end of April or by mid-May, according to an earlier EC announcement.
