The caretaker government yesterday formed a “core committee” on food stock and market situation with Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed as its chief to prepare a package of measures for providing income support to the people, particularly fixed-and low-income groups, for purchasing foodstuffs.
The other members of the top-level committee are advisers for finance, agriculture, food, and commerce, secretaries of the line ministries, BDR director general (DG), the cabinet secretary and the secretary to the chief adviser.
In its first meeting yesterday afternoon with Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed in the chair, the core committee discussed short-term economic stimulus package for next April to June period.
The meeting emphasised further expansion of operation of the Open Market Sale of rice. It was informed that allocation of rice under OMS has been tripled until March from about 14,308 MT in January. “The expansion of allocation will continue,” the meeting observed.
It also discussed continuation and expansion of VGF and VGD progarmmes for making food available to the hardcore poor.
The core-committee meeting decided to give the OMS dealers’ commission at Tk 1.5 per-kg rice instead of Tk 1 per kg presently.
Per-family allocation of rice has also been increased to 5 kilograms (kg) from 4kg.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim briefed newsmen about the formation and initial decisions of the core committee.
