The jail authorities yesterday suspended for three months the division in jail accorded to five high-profile detainees as they breached the jail code by using mobile phones inside jail.
Ex-BNP lawmakers Mosaddek Ali Falu and Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu also lost their right to meet visitors for the same offence.
The prisoners whose division in jail was put on hold are former BNP ministers Nazmul Huda and Altaf Hossain Choudhury, former BNP lawmaker and political adviser to BNP chairperson Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, former Awami League state minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir and Nazmul Huda’s wife Sigma Huda.
Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Maj Shamsul Haider Siddique told The Daily Star that Sigma Huda was given division in jail following court orders even though she was not a lawmaker.
A division holder is entitled to a small cot, newspapers and other facilities.
“The punitive measures were taken against them for their breaking the jail code two months ago. The jail authorities had filed cases against them for this but the court did not take cognisance of it. So the jail authorities took the actions that fall within their jurisdiction”, Inspector General (Prisons) Brig Gen Zakir Hassan told The Daily Star.
He said the decision was taken Tuesday night and has been effective from yesterday morning.
Nazmul Huda and Altaf Hossain are now staying in Narayanganj Jail, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir in Kashimpur Jail and Sigma Huda in Dhaka Central Jail.
For the recent violation of the jail code, the jail authorities Tuesday sent Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury to Bogra Jail, Mossaddek Ali Falu to Panchagarh Jail, Salauddin Ahmed to Bandarban Jail, Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu to Lalmonirhat Jail, Jamaat leader Abu Taher to Narsingdi Jail and former BNP MP and Partex Group Chairman MA Hashem to Barguna Jail.
According to jail sources, Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury has already been whisked between Kashimpur, Sylhet and Narayanganj jails for his repeated violation of the jail code.
Former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, former Dhaka Club president Selim Bhuiyan and former Chittagong Port chairman Sahadat Hossain were sent back to jail from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), where they had been admitted for treatment, for the same offence.
On Sunday, authorities found BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman, now admitted to the BSMMU, talking over the cell phone of a doctor.
The following day the authorities decided that prisoners would be denied their right to meet visitors if they violate the jail code.
