Download PDF The country echoed with the demand for the trial of war criminals once again yesterday as the nation celebrated its 38th Independence Day through paying tribute to the Liberation War martyrs and vowing to bring the war criminals to book.
Hundreds of thousands of people belonging to different generations led by freedom fighters stood before war memorials across the country and took the oath to free Bangladesh of Razakars.
The celebration of Independence Day this year had a new perspective as the nation is struggling to restore democracy and introduce a healthy political practice through reforms ensuring people’s rights.
People expressed their desire and demand for bringing back democracy through a free, fair and impartial national election which is expected to be held by this year end as pledged by both the government and Election Commission.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding leader, formally declared the independence of Bangladesh on this day in 1971. The declaration led to the nine-month long Liberation War against the Pakistani occupation forces, culminating in the emergence of a sovereign state on the global map.
The much-cherished trial of the war criminals in special tribunal has not been met in the last 37 years since independence.
People took a fresh vow of bringing the war criminals to justice at a time when the war criminals have begun denying the very existence of any anti-liberation force during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
The demand for the trial of war criminals was raised by national and international communities immediately after the emergence of Bangladesh on December 16, 1971.
Families and relatives of martyrs, victims of war crimes, freedom fighters, socio-political and cultural organisations, human rights bodies, leading professionals and eminent citizens of the country waged movements for the war criminals’ trial on numerous occasions. But due attention was never paid to the demand.
In the early 1990s, Shaheed Janani (mother of martyrs) Jahanara Imam took to the street with the demand and hundreds of thousands of people joined her. Unfortunately, the movement failed because of the negligence of the authorities concerned.
After this caretaker government assumed power last year, the demand was raised again with the initiation of different government drives against corruption and irregularities committed by high-profile graft suspects.
The arrest of two former premiers Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia sowed the seed of expectation in the minds of people that the government will also meet the long-standing demand.
The expectation gradually turned into a desire. At one stage, the sector commanders of the Liberation War and war heroes became united last year to press home the demand.
People thronged the war memorials and independence monuments, including the National Memorial at Savar, yesterday to place floral wreaths at the altars to pay homage to the martyrs and vowed to bring the war criminals to justice.
The major two political parties of the country–BNP and Awami League (AL)–also observed the day along with other political and cultural organisations. Different organisations of freedom fighters, war heroes, their family and relatives, teachers, students and people from all walks of life also thronged the war memorials to voice their demand and observe the day.
A mixed feeling of happiness and sorrow gripped people as 31 gun salutes heralded the beginning of the Independence Day celebration at dawn.
Contingents of freedom fighters, Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force, Bangladesh Rifles, police, coastguards, ansar-VDP, different law enforcement agencies, BNCC and horse riders joined the Independence Day parade at the National Parade Square starting from 10:00am.
Parading tanks, machineguns, air-to-air missiles, antitank missiles, antisubmarine torpedo and the fly-past by Bell helicopters, Cessna, Chinese F-7 jets and Russian MiG-29 supersonic warplanes exhibited the prowess of Bangladesh military in safeguarding the nation’s independence and sovereignty.
President Iajuddin Ahmed accompanied by the chiefs of the three defence forces took the salute at the parade.
Former Indian army officials, who fought in the Liberation War, led by JFR Jacob were present at the parade. They paid homage to martyrs.
The day was a public holiday. The national flag was flown at government and private offices and buildings.
This year the government dropped the programme of illuminating different buildings and city points in the evening to save electricity.
A few naval ships were on display from 2:00pm to 5:30pm at Sadarghat in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chittagong, Khulna, Mongla Port and Barisal.
Newspapers published special supplements while electronic media broadcast programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
Special prayer was offered at all religious worship centres across the country for eternal peace of the martyrs and divine blessings for the country’s prosperity.

Our green and beautiful country will never be free from curse until the war criminals - the obnoxious weeds d get due punishment for their atrocities and crime.No nation can leave in peace if the group opposing its nationhood thrives i and continue conspipiring. Wonder how so many vailiant freedom fighters felt when noted war criminals became ministers of a democratic government.How people voted for them? How could we so easily forget these people were actively involved in killing our brothers and raping our sisters. Do not let these snakes bite you.They are venomous. If we fail to try these ferocious animals now our very existence will soon be at stake.

War criminal trial has become a political issue to win in the next election.It is very shame for the myrters of the independence.It may be a hypocracy aganist the country.It’s also shame for the nation.

After 36 years it looks like the country has woken up for the war criminals! The great leader of the country, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to last prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, none had carriage to bought them criminals to justice, WHY? What went wrong in their minds while they were in power? Why after 36 years? If the trial goes ahead, how will the present dictator solve the Pakistani Army and Indian Army, who are the real war criminals of the crimes been committed in 1971. Any war crimes been committed, whether from inside or outside should be bought to justice under one agenda but is it possible?

In recent Bangladesh price hike has been blamed the government by the political leaders but in reality the world in Undeclared recession, such poor country bound to pay the price. How twisted our political leaders are in general.
We say we are proud of our country, Living in England I have noticed, how proud we are when it comes to sending pounds in exchange gets more taka, but don’t realise how low our currency is gone down to. WE ARE PROUD BANGALI - That’s we should be, but in hypocritical manner. We should be shamed of our selves, rather building the country for the future generation we are in fact downgrading our selves from economically and politically.
