Central Awami League (AL) leaders have ruled out the possibility of going for any movement right now to get party chief Sheikh Hasina released despite immense pressure from grassroots level leaders.
Top AL leaders believe that they would be able to get Hasina released within a few weeks through negotiation with the government.
AL Presidium member Suranjit Sengupta said they would not object to any decision the party president makes about her.
Leaders of metropolitan, district, and upazila units of AL and its front organisations have been putting immense pressure on the AL central committee for the last few months to go for movements to free former premier Hasina, who has been kept behind bars since July 16 last year.
But the central leaders are saying that such movements would not be successful at this point of time under the state of emergency, as they have neither enough organisational strength nor preparation to go for movements to get the party president released.
“We are ready to go for movements any time with our maximum organisational capacity,” said Debiganj upazila AL General Secretary Mohammad Gias Uddin Chowdhury.
The AL, however, has a plan to take to the street in the coming days to press home the demand for an end to the prevailing crises including price hike of essentials.
The party would demand the release of Hasina from the street after mobilising people of all walks of life over these issues.
Top party leaders will sit with metropolitan, district and upazila level leaders to get their views on the matter after the AL central committee sits on March 29 to make some important decisions in this regard, the party insiders said.
Suranjit Sengupta said time and situation would tell them what to do.
“We are united over the issue of the release of our party chief and hope that the government will release her soon and send her abroad for treatment,” he added.
AL grassroots level leaders are unhappy with the central committee’s stance on the issue.
Talking to The Daily Star, a number of AL district and upazila unit leaders said, the party has not been able to make any decision on the matter due to dispute among key central leaders. But the party should go for movements immediately to get Hasina released unconditionally.
“Although grassroots level leaders are putting pressure on us, we can’t go for movements right now as things are different under the state of emergency,” a key AL leader told The Daily Star wishing anonymity.
“But we can’t ignore their demand. We have to go for movements at one point of time in future,” said another AL leader.
Mohammad Jainal Abedin, president of Meherpur District AL Unit said, “We shall try our level best to implement the programmes the central leaders announce to get our party chief released.”
Programmes should be announced for the sake of the country and its welfare, said Abdul Hai, general secretary of Dharmapasha Upazila AL Unit in Sunamganj.
