Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday announced the decision to introduce mobile-phone network in Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.
The government decision met a long-cherished demand of the people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, once a troubled region that returned to peace following the 1997 peace accord.
Mobile-phone network will be primarily available in the municipal areas of the three district headquarters.
The chief adviser said setting up digital telephone exchanges at upazila level in the hill districts would be considered following availability of resources.
He hoped that decision on manpower for setting up judge courts in the three districts would be taken within next three months.
Fakhruddin announced the government decisions at an opinion-exchange meeting with government officials and people of different professional groups of the region at Rangamati Tribal Cultural Institute auditorium in the morning. The meeting was organised by Rangamati district administration.
Raja Debashish Roy, special assistant to the chief adviser on Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) affairs, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Hossain Zamil and Deputy Commissioner of Rangamti Nurul Amin also spoke at the meeting.
CHT Regional Council Chairman Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma alias Santu Larma, Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed and General Officer Commanding of 24 Infantry Division Maj Gen Mohammad Abdul Mobin were present at the time.
The chairmen of the three hill district parishads, representatives of businesses, small entrepreneurs and women community, members of the advisory committee on CHT affairs ministry and headmen of different tribes took part in the exchange of opinions.
The chief adviser assured his audience that the government would soon decide to increase the allowance of headmen.
He said the objective of the present government is to ensure socio-economic and cultural progress of the hilly peoples, who need to maintain peace and discipline. He observed that the unfortunate situation that was created in the region in the past has been overcome to a large extent today.
He noted that irrespective of ethnicity, language and culture and religious beliefs, everybody of the region is citizen of Bangladesh.
“We want to create such an environment wherein everyone will contribute to the advancement of the country by maintaining cordial relations, mutual trust and confidence.
“Let us proceed towards the path of shared prosperity through mutual trust by discarding the thorny path of mistrust and doubt,” he told his audience.
The CA sought cooperation of all of the region to make the transition to democracy a success through holding a free, fair and neutral election by next December which will help build a corruption-free, prosperous and enlightened Bangladesh.
The chief adviser left Rangamati for Bandarban in the afternoon where he will stay overnight. He will visit some Bandarban areas this morning before returning to Dhaka.
