Khandaker Delwar Hossain, BNP secretary general appointed by Chairperson Khaleda Zia, yesterday said the chief election commissioner (CEC) would be held responsible for any delay in holding the national election.
He said it was the poll chief who had left the ‘mainstream BNP’ out of the Election Commission’s (EC) dialogue with the political parties on electoral reforms, leading to a stalemate.
“He [CEC] has lost his neutrality. Nobody believes him,” he added.
Delwar made the observations, talking to reporters at his Nam flat yesterday morning. Earlier on Thursday night, he returned home after spending about a month in the US and Singapore for treatment.
Referring to CEC ATM Shamsul Huda’s recent remarks, he said, “I don’t know who makes him speak. People have no faith in his roadmap, and only he knows where it stands now.”
Criticising the military-backed interim administration, he said the various crises plaguing the country could be resolved only if the government cares to act in accordance with the constitution.
“Their [the government] only task is to have the parliamentary polls held within 90 days, but they have violated the constitution by not doing so,” he added.
Asked if they would forge any movement to protest skyrocketing prices of essentials, he said, “People won’t wait for any party or individual. If things worsen further, they will take to the streets on their own.”
Differing with the food adviser about the present situation, Delwar said, “It’s not true that there is no famine in the country. There’s an acute shortage of food, and people just don’t have money to buy foods.”
About BNP’s stance on the proposed dialogue with the government, he said the decision would be made in consultation with the party leaders.
Asked about his party colleagues’ views on talks with the government, he said, “Since I’m the spokesman of the organisation as its secretary general, my opinion should be taken as the party’s.”
He added that as long as he is not relieved of the duties by the chairperson, executive decisions regarding the party would come from him.
However, he said, the decision on the fate of the expelled leaders rests with the party chief.
