Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday told the district administrators to focus on laying the groundwork for the general elections to be held by the end of this year.

Fakhruddin also told the deputy commissioners (DCs) not to leave a “foot of arable land” uncultivated to boost agricultural production, as there is no other alternative to rein in rising food prices.

“The main focus of the caretaker government is to hold free, fair, credible and acceptable polls by December,” said Fakhruddin at the inauguration of the three-day seminar for DCs at the international conference centre of the Chief Adviser’s Office.

The chief adviser told the DCs they must cooperate with the Election Commission (EC) to expedite the voter registration process. He lauded the DCs for their role in registering voters with photographs so far and their coordination with the military, EC and the upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs).

The chief adviser also asked the DCs to improve law and order to set the stage for a fair election.

He also said all district-level officials must remember their pledge to serve the people by maintaining unquestionable integrity, honesty, patriotism and neutrality.

“Transparency, accountability, efficiency and professionalism must be maintained,” said Fakhruddin, adding, the government will not tolerate any negligence in this regard.

This was the second DCs’ conference after the present caretaker government assumed office.

Fakhruddin admitted a rise in prices of essentials despite the government’s best efforts and said DCs are crucial to mitigate the ongoing food crisis, especially for the poorest.

He told them not to leave a “foot of arable” land uncultivated and to turn one-crop farmland into two-crop land, and two-crop land into three-crop ones.

The CA asked them to regularly consult local communities about ways to keep food prices down and by better management of local markets as most of the poorest operate in this ‘informal economy’.

He said the planned ‘farmers’ markets would significantly boost the economy, but the existing local markets must be managed efficiently and transparently.

“You have to be sensitive to the demands and needs of locals alongside your implementation of government programmes,” he said, adding, they must ensure smooth supply of agricultural products, such as fertiliser and fuel.

Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumder, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Hafizur Rahman, Satkhira DC Kefayetullah, Bandarban DC Abdul Majid Shah Akand and Manikganj DC Ataur Rahman spoke at the inauguration.

Cabinet members, special assistants to the CA, divisional commissioners and military officials also attended the meet.
