Govt to find real farmers for subsidy

The government yesterday directed the deputy commissioners (DCs) to take steps to ensure that farmers are not harassed during Boro procurement and they get quick payment for their produce.On the second day of the three-day annual conference in the city, the DCs were also asked to prepare a list of “real farmers” to begin distribution of Tk 750 crore in diesel subsidies this month.About concerns that executive magistrates are having difficulty discharging some of their duties including running mobile courts after separation of the judiciary, the government told the district administrators that if necessary the Code of Criminal Procedure could ... Dhaka-Kolkata train service okayed

The Council of Advisers yesterday approved the draft of Dhaka-Kolkata passenger train service and sent the Truth and Accountability Commission draft to the law ministry for further scrutiny.An agreement between Bangladesh and India would be signed "soon" for the train service, which both the countries have agreed in principle to start from April 14.Earlier, railway officials finalised the details of the service at a two-day bilateral meet on Wednesday-Thursday.The "Moitree [friendship] Express" will travel between the Cantonment station in Dhaka and the Chitpur station in Kolkata through Darshana border. 5 cops get life for rape at camp

A Chuadanga court yesterday sentenced five policemen to life imprisonment for raping a woman at a police camp in Alamdanga upazila on December 18, 2004.District Women and Children Repression Prevention Court Judge Motahar Hossain delivered the verdict in presence of the five convicts.They are Subedar Abdul Kuddus, Habildar Rokonuzzaman, constables Iftekharul Kabir, Harunur Rashid and Harun-or-Rashid.The prosecution said the five policemen of Gokulkhali police camp in Alamdanga upazila picked up Dolly, a widow, from Bhalaipur intersection where she had been waiting for transport to get back home at Mukterpur of Damurhuda upazila at about 8:30pm.They took her to the ... WB proposals in a yr on boosting trade, regional transport in S Asia

Artefacts reveal rich history of craftsmanship

Archaeological studies on semi-precious stone beads and other artefacts found in Wari-Bateshwar indicate people of this land have a rich history of craftsmanship as old as around 2,500 years.Plenty of semi-precious stone beads are found and unearthed from Wari-Bateshwar and some of those are even identical to the artefacts found in Southeast Asia and other parts in the Indian subcontinent. Moeen gets one-year extension

BJP chief Naziur passes away

Veteran politician and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) chairman Naziur Rahman Manzur passed away early yesterday after he suffered a cardiac arrest. He was 59.Naziur, the once influential minister during the Ershad regime, was undergoing treatment at Birdem Hospital in the capital where he was admitted on Saturday.He breathed his last at about 5:00am, Birdem sources said, adding that the freedom fighter had been suffering from various complications including liver cirrhosis, diabetes and kidney problems.He left his wife, three sons and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.A namaz-e-janaza of Naziur was held at the South Plaza of ...
