Regulatory Reforms Commission (RRC) Chairman Dr Akbar Ali Khan yesterday called on politicians to map out their strategies to ensure food security after the general elections.
“Politicians are talking about the elections. They should have plans as to what they’ll do to check existing food shortages, petroleum price hike and power shortages after polls,” he said.
“It’ll be difficult for them to solve the problems unless they don’t have plans,” he said while speaking at a dialogue on agriculture, food security and rural development.
The dialogue was held under the banner “Bangladesh First Bangladesh 2025″ at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
“People are in distress due to the existing food shortages. We have to come out of this unbearable condition,” he added.
It is not possible for the government alone to solve the problem, he said, adding that it is a national problem and politicians as well as private sector should come up to address it.
Dr Akbar went on to say that the government should present a complete picture of what it is doing.
He also recommended taking care of women and children, saying they become more vulnerable when such shortages occur.
“It requires a medium and long term planning. But it’s not possible to solve the problems within the tenure of the caretaker government.”
Recommending a package for agriculture, he said: “It’s not only about providing subsidy. We need a total package for agriculture,” referring to fertiliser, seed and irrigation.
He also emphasized giving attention to the power and energy sector.
Gene scientist Dr Abed Chowdhury and agri-scientist Dr Zahurul Karim, among others, also spoke.
