Veteran politician and Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) chairman Naziur Rahman Manzur passed away early yesterday after he suffered a cardiac arrest. He was 59.
Naziur, the once influential minister during the Ershad regime, was undergoing treatment at Birdem Hospital in the capital where he was admitted on Saturday.
He breathed his last at about 5:00am, Birdem sources said, adding that the freedom fighter had been suffering from various complications including liver cirrhosis, diabetes and kidney problems.
He left his wife, three sons and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
A namaz-e-janaza of Naziur was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban after the Johr prayers yesterday.
His body has been kept at the Birdem mortuary.
Earlier, his body was taken to his Baridhara home from hospital and kept there till evening where leaders of different political parties paid their last respects.
After Asr prayers today, the second namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
He will be buried at his village home in Bhola tomorrow after his son Ashiqur Rahman arrives from abroad. The final janaza would be held there.
President Iajuddin Ahmed, Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, Speaker barrister Jamiruddin Sircar and Deputy Speaker Akhter Hamid Siddiqui expressed deep shock at the death of Naziur.
In separate condolence messages, they said Naziur was an experienced and dedicated politician and he played a great role in social service and different development works.
Naziur was born in Bhola on March 15, 1948.
He served as LGRD minister from 1987 to 1990 during the Jatiya Party rule. Naziur was also mayor of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) from February to December 1990.
He broke with the Jatiya Party afterwards and formed BJP, which was a partner of BNP-led four-party alliance.
The DCC declared holiday yesterday to mourn the death of former city mayor.
BNP standing committee appointed acting chairperson Saifur Rahman, Secretary General Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, former secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, DCC, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rob) and different organisations in separate condolence messages expressed deep shock at the demise of Naziur.
