The High Court (HC) yesterday stayed for two months proceedings in a graft case against Zubaida Rahman, wife of now detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman.
An HC bench comprising Justice Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Emdadul Haque also issued a rule on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), asking it to explain within two weeks why the case shall not be cancelled.
The rule and stay came in response to a petition filed on Monday by Zubaida, a doctor by profession, for quashing of the graft proceedings against her.
On September 26 last year, the ACC filed the case against detained Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Tarique, his wife Zubaida and mother-in-law Iqbal Mand Banu for amassing assets through illegal means and concealing information in the wealth statement.
Investigation officer (IO) of the case pressed charges against the three at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, Dhaka, on March 31. Fifty-seven people were shown as prosecution witnesses.
According to the charge sheet, Tarique has accumulated wealth worth around Tk 2.75 crore beyond his known sources of income and held back information about assets worth around Tk 2.17 crore in his statement to the anti-graft body.
Zubaida and her mother were accused of aiding and abetting Tarique.
Khandker Mahbub Uddin Ahmed and barrister Rafiqul Islam Mian stood for Zubaida while Anisul Huq moved for the ACC.
ACC sources said the commission is likely to appeal to the Supreme Court to overturn the HC stay.
