The government has formed five working groups to make a national action plan by 2008 to combat Monga, a near-famine situation, in the country’s northern region.
The decision was made at the first meeting of the national committee on Monga at the conference room of the commerce ministry yesterday with Commerce and Education Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman in the chair.
The five groups, formed on livelihood, infrastructure development, human resources, information and energy, power and irrigation will work through coordination.
The working group on livelihood is headed by Agriculture Secretary Abdul Aziz while the group on infrastructure development by LGRD Secretary Sheikh Khurshid Alam.
Kazi Aminul Islam, secretary to the chief adviser, will lead the group on human resources while the groups on information and energy, power and irrigation will be headed by PKSF Managing Director Dr Kazi Mezbah Uddin Ahmed and the energy secretary.
Agriculture and Water Resources Adviser Dr CS Karim, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Secretary Abdul Matin Chowdhury, and high officials of different government departments and organisations were present.
They hoped that the steps taken for combating Monga would help reduce hardships of the people in the country’s northern region.
