Former agriculture minister Motia Chowdhury yesterday waited in the queue for nearly five hours to buy rice from an Open Market Sale (OMS) outlet in the city, only to return empty-handed.
She joined the queue at 8:00am at Kadamtala OMS outlet at South Basabo and waited there till 12:30pm.
“But, like several hundred low-and middle-income people, I did not get rice. The sellers told us that they had run out of stock,” she told reporters at noon.
Motia, an Awami League presidium member, said she now knows that the government has taken to “falsehood” about the availability of rice for the poor.
“The government is telling lies. They’re saying that adequate rice is available on the market. But the reality is that a big section of the people, mainly the poor, have to pass days without food,” she said.
Motia demanded that the government set up OMS centre in every ward of the city and distribute rice through the ward commissioners.
“I request the caretaker government not to tell lies. People are not so foolish. They know the truth,” she said.
Asked why a person of her stature had to stand in line for rice, Motia said she thought of saving some money by buying rice from the OMS shop. “I wanted to buy some eggs with the rest of the money.”
