A number of social and political organisations yesterday condemned the violent activities of some Islamist organisations which they said made the National Women Development Policy 2008 an issue in order to achieve political gain.

Meantime, a Dhaka court yesterday rejected the bail petitions of nine Islamist activists in a case for instigating violence and assaulting policemen near the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital on Friday.

Samajik Protirodh Committee in a statement demanded the cancellation of the committee the government formed to review the women development policy and called for banning political activities in religious institutions.

Advocate Sultana Kamal, former adviser to a caretaker government, Dr Badiul Alam Majumder of Hunger Project of Bangladesh, Shirin Akhter of Karmajibi Nari, Ayesha Khanam of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Hajera Sultana of Narimukti Sangsad, among others, signed the statement.

The statement said that the Islamists were spewing out false information about the women policy and disturbing law and order in a bid to bag political gain.

Wondering how the Islamists could resort to violence when the state of emergency is still in force, it said, “When the country is vocal in its demand for the trial of war criminals, fundamentalist quarters are trying to put pressure on the government by making the women development policy an issue.”

The Democratic Left Alliance (DLA) expressed anxiety over the violence at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and urged the government to pull the plug on using the mosque in achieving political and other gains.

Wonder why Government is allowing this identified anti libeartion elements to create crisis in the name of Nari Adhikar act. Women of Bangladesh are even deprived of many constitutional right. There is nothing anti Islamic in asking equal rights for ourintegral part of society. These people are delibeartely creating smoke to divert attention from popular demand for trial of War Criminals.
When amjor political parties are showing restraint for Emmergency these elements are violating it. Government must take extreme actions .Other political parties must not create situation for confrontation. Otherwise the third party may fish in the mud.
