The Army should not be called in for holding the general election, said former adviser to caretaker government M Hafizuddin Khan yesterday.

“The general election in Nepal was held peacefully without engaging its armed forces in the election activities. We can also apply it in our country. A basic political agreement should be struck between the political parties in this regard,” said M Hafizuddin Khan, who led an election observer team in Nepal, while speaking at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.

The team that observed general election in Nepal, also gave suggestions to the caretaker government to identify specific spots where political parties can hold rallies.

He also said the Election Commission (EC) should employ volunteers for assisting the voters on the election day.

“ In Nepal, a total of 1.18 lakh volunteers were employed for assisting the voters,” he said.

Hafizuddin, who led the team in Nepal under the banner of Bangladesh Manabadhikar Samannay Parishad, yesterday placed nine recommendations for holding the next general election peacefully.

AHM Noman, chairman of the Parishad, said the caretaker government should take all the necessary steps for holding a free, fair and credible election.

Parishad Director Advocate Muhammad Samsuddin, among others, was present.
