Awami League top leaders yesterday said their 5-point demand is gradually turning into a one-point demand for unconditional release of detained party chief Sheikh Hasina.
“Our 5-point demand is moving towards one-point demand and that is Sheikh Hasina’s release,” party’s senior presidium member Amir Hossain Amu told hunger strikers at AL central office at Bangabandhu Avenue.
Amu demanded parliamentary elections prior to any election. He said those who favour local body election first would jump on movement when Awami League calls for joining agitation as, he said, most of them are supporters of Awami League.
Presidium member Suranjit Sengupta said the election must be held according to national and international demand and there can not be any deviation from that.
He said none can play with the national elections in the name of holding upazila polls.
Demanding restoration of people’s political rights, Suranjit questioned the government’s sincerity about holding the parliamentary polls.
He said Awami League wants dialogue with the caretaker government and its success but to make it a success release of Sheikh Hasina is a must.
The token hunger strike was organised by Muktijoddha Janata League demanding unconditional release of Hasina.
