Army chief General Moeen U Ahmed yesterday asked leading importers of edible oil to maintain smooth supply of the essential commodity in the country.

“We are aware about the global market situation. But we want to see a smooth supply of essential commodities like edible oil,” Gen Moeen told the importers at a meeting at his Cantonment office.

”The government is hopeful that you will continue importing edible oil as much as the country requires,” he said, directing the importers to keep the oil stock at their godowns limited to counter the price hike.

Informing the importers that Bangladesh Army has planted palm under some pilot projects in Tangail, Moeen urged them also to plant palm in the country to replicate the success of the army project and thus achieve some self-dependency in palm oil.

He gave assurance that if any trader wants to start farming palm, the army will supply them with seed.

The oil refiners also assured the army chief that they will maintain their usual imports if the law enforcement agencies cooperate with them.

City Group Chairman Fazlur Rahman¸ Meghna Group Managing Director Mostafa Kamal, TK Group Managing Director MA Kalam, S Alam Group Chairman Masudul Alam, Bangladesh Rifles Director General Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed and DGFI Director General Maj Gen Golam Mohammad participated in the high profile meeting.

The price of edible oil rose again in both retail and wholesale markets following a couple of weeks’ stability. Soya bean oil was selling at Tk 110-115 per litre on retail markets; the price was Tk 100 in the previous week.
