High demand, fewer stations cause chaos

The CNG refuelling stations in the capital are struggling to cope with the ever-increasing demand for the fuel as conversion of petroleum-run vehicles continues at a very high pace.On average, about 2,000 vehicles are being converted into CNG-run ones every month, and about 92,135 vehicles were converted in 116 conversion workshops across the country until March this year.The insufficient CNG stations, which face frequent disruption due to persisting power outage, result in long queues of vehicles, often impeding traffic flow on the surrounding roads.As the potential entrepreneurs keep seeking permission to set up new CNG stations to avoid such gridlocks, ... Cyclone Nargis : Nargis finally lashes Myanmar coast after missing Bangladesh

People of the country heaved a sigh of relief as cyclone Nargis did not finally hit Bangladesh, changing its course eastward and starting to cross Myanmar yesterday evening."The severe cyclonic storm with a core of hurricane winds over east central Bay and adjoining area moved eastwards and is crossing Myanmar coast," a Met official said yesterday evening.The Met Office said cyclone Nargis that brew in the Bay and showed erratic behaviour started to cross the Irawaddy delta coast at 6:00pm and would take the whole night to cross the coast and become weak.It has advised the maritime ports of Chittagong, ... Ensure fair wages, safe environment for workers

Outlaws kill cop, loot firearms in Rajshahi

Suspected outlaws shot dead a policeman, injured four others and snatched five firearms from them in an attack on a police patrol team at Taherpur of Bagmara upazila yesterday evening.Constable Mizanur Rahman of Panchagarh was shot point blank in the head as a group of around 25 armed miscreants attacked the police team patrolling a weekly cattle market. His body was recovered from a pond near Taherpur Degree College.Nayek Shahinur, constables Samiul Kabir and Sarwar Hossain, and ansar member Abdul Aziz of the patrol team were also found lying near the pond. Storm kills 2, destroys over 1,000 houses

Nor'westers lashed four districts--Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Rangpur and Mymensingh-- early yesterday and on Thursday night, killing two people and damaging over 1,000 houses.In Jamalpur, the storm hit 30 villages of Bakshiganj and Dewanganj upazilas early yesterday, killing a man named Lokman Ali, 50, of Alipara village in Bakshiganj upazila.According to local sources, the storm caused partial damage to Boro paddy on 3,000 hectares of land in the two upazilas and uprooted many trees and electric poles.Our Gaibandha correspondent reported that one person was killed and 15 others were injured in the season's first nor'wester that lashed seven unions of ... Cheated workers forced to buy fake passports

The Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia allegedly has been exhibiting unwillingness to stand by its compatriot migrant workers there, while a well organised racket of Bangladeshi passport forgers comprising nationals of both countries is raking in a large sum of money by selling fake passports to workers desperate to return home.Migrant Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia, who were cheated and abused, are being forced to buy the fake passports because the high commission allegedly is not helping them in obtaining the travel documents required to return home, according to sources observing manpower trade between the two countries.Involvement of some official of ... 13 grenades, ammo found in Chittagong

Thirteen more grenades, seven magazines and 2,184 bullets were recovered at a canal in Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong during the last two days.Workers engaged in digging the canal discovered 10 grenades and 422 bullets at the same place on April 28.Sources said the workers found the grenades around two feet under the ground at Sheikhpara of the upazila around 11:00am Thursday.Boalkhali police went to the spot and recovered the grenades, magazines and 2,178 bullets Thursday night.Police and workers were seen busy digging in the area yesterday morning. Washington lauds Dhaka’s anti-terrorism efforts
