Thirteen more grenades, seven magazines and 2,184 bullets were recovered at a canal in Boalkhali upazila of Chittagong during the last two days.
Workers engaged in digging the canal discovered 10 grenades and 422 bullets at the same place on April 28.
Sources said the workers found the grenades around two feet under the ground at Sheikhpara of the upazila around 11:00am Thursday.
Boalkhali police went to the spot and recovered the grenades, magazines and 2,178 bullets Thursday night.
Police and workers were seen busy digging in the area yesterday morning. They recovered six bullets around 10:30am yesterday.
Experts from Bangladesh Army examined the grenades. The grenades were detonated at a nearby field around 7:00am yesterday. The bullets are in police custody.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Boalkhali Police Station Aminul Islam Sarker said the grenades were old and could have been kept under the ground since the Liberation War.
Local Union Parishad (UP) member Abu Taleb said he does not know about any Liberation War battles that took place in Sheikhpara or its adjoining areas.
“I have no idea how the ammo got there and I do not know if we would have to face any sufferings for them,” said Sekandar, a resident Sheikhpara, fearing harassment.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Tofail Ahmed of Patiya Circle told The Daily Star yesterday afternoon that the search for more hidden arms and ammo is on.
