The PGCL (Pashchimancal Gas Company Limited) has stopped providing any new connections to industrial establishments and CNG refuelling stations in Bogra, Pabna and Sirajganj due to acute shortage of gas.
Talking to The Daily Star, Engineer Fazle Alam, deputy manager and in-charge of PGCL Bogra office, admitted that they were forced to stop giving new connections due to short supply of gas.
Applications for opening of some 30 CNG refuelling stations in the three districts could not be approved for this reason, he added.
Talking to The Daily Star, a senior official of PGCL feared that the gas situation would worsen when the 20-Megawatt (MW) rental power station in Bogra goes into operation in June.
The situation will turn grave by November, as there would be an additional demand for 19 mmcfd (million cubic feet per day) more with the opening of two other power stations, he added.
At present, the company is supplying them 76 mmcfd gas on an average against the total demand of over 87 mmcfd in the three districts, sources said. The sales department of PGCL, however, said that they receive 85 mmcfd gas.
The 24-Megawatt GBB rental power station has already started power supply, which uses about 5 mmcfd gas.
Another 20-Megawatt power station in Bogra and 11-Megawatt power station at Ullapara in Sirajganj will start operation in November, the officials said adding that the two power stations will require 2.60 mmcfd gas for generating electricity.
PGCL Managing Director Saiful Alam Chowdhary has sent a letter to the director (Operation), Petro Bangla a few days ago requesting to increase the gas supply to 100 mmcfd for smooth supply to the three power stations, some CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) stations and the domestic connections.
