More than 600 businesses in Bogra are using nitric and other corrosive acids without any licence, contributing to rising acid violence in the district.

A senior police official said due to the availability of acid, acid violence in Bogra is higher than in other districts.

At least five acid-throwing cases have been filed in the last four months. Two such cases were registered in the fourth quarter of last year, said the official preferring anonymity.

The deputy commissioner said the district administration will soon take action against illegal acid trade and use through mobile courts. He said the administration has already asked the businesses concerned to be licensed. He, however, admitted that the response has not been as expected yet.

District administration sources said only seven businesses are licensed to sell acid and 12 people have the permission to use it in the district. But more than 50 businesses are selling nitric, sulphuric and other corrosive acids and over 600 small-scale businesses, including jewellers, are using the corrosive liquid unlicensed for years.

Bogra unit of Bangladesh Jewellers Samity said at least 300 goldsmiths are using nitric and sulphuric acids without any licence at Bogra New market and adjoining areas.
