Two suspected criminals were beaten to death and two others injured seriously by a mob at Dattapara in Tongi after the gang gunned down a local trader.

Police said five criminals sprayed bullets on waste-cloth trader Jahangir Alam, 50, in front of a grocery near his home on Bonomala Road at about 9:45am, killing him on the spot.

Jahangir went to the grocery along with his son to buy the child chips.

Enraged, locals chased the gang and caught four of them, all aged between 25 and 30. The mob beat up the four criminals leaving them seriously injured.

Police rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared two of them dead. They were identified as Selim and Faruque.

Police said they recovered two revolvers, a pistol and several rounds of bullet from the criminals.

Quoting the two injured, Sub-Inspector Abdur Razzak of Tongi Police Station said Kabir Hossain Likhon, another waste-cloth trader in the area, hired them to kill Jahangir following business disputes.

Jahangir’s son Russel alias Sajib told police that several days ago an anonymous caller demanded that his father pay him Tk 6 lakh as extortion.

The person called Jahangir again on Thursday and threatened that he would not be able to run his business if he does not pay him the money.

Russel filed a case with Tongi Police Station against four people including Likhon.
