The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has pressed charges against the son of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan Shah Alam — Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir — and four others in a case filed for killing Humayun Kabir Sabbir, a director of Bashundhara Group in July 2006.

The CID yesterday also sought a five-day remand to interrogate detained former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and one of his accomplices in a case filed for taking and accepting bribes to suppress Sabbir’s murder case.

A Dhaka court has meanwhile directed the jail authorities to produce three accused, including Babar and detained BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman, on May 20 in a Tk 21 crore bribery case.

BABAR TO BE INTERROGATED
Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP) of CID Syed Momin Hossain, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted a five-day remand prayer to interrogate Babar and former director of East West Property Development Pvt Ltd Abu Sufian.

The IO sought the remand to find out vital clues about the motive behind Sabbir’s killing and to know the whereabouts of the accused responsible.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shahnaz Sultana fixed May 18 for hearing on the remand prayer in presence of the accused.

ASP of CID Arman Ali filed the case with Ramna police against Babar, Shah Alam, Abu Sufian, and a director of Prime Bank and former BNP lawmaker Qazi Saleemul Huq Kamal on May 8.

SABBIR MURDER
The IO ASP of CID Arman Ali yesterday submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court of Dhaka against the accused in Sabbir’s murder case, showing 35 people as prosecution witnesses.

The other charge sheeted accused are Sanvir’s bodyguard Khairul Hassan Ujjal, 31, two gatekeepers — Nure Alam, 28, and Humayun Kabir, 28, and Shamsuddin Ahmed, 57.

Of them, Ujjal and Shamsuddin are now in jail while Sanvir and two others have been absconding since the case was filed.

The IO prayed for issuance of arrest warrants against Sanvir and two others and the order to attach their properties, as they have been absconding since the case was filed.

Sabbir, a director of Basundhara Telecommunications Network Ltd, was brutally killed on July 5, 2006 and his body was found outside a building in Bashundhara residential area in the city.

Later, Shah Alam tried to save his son Sanvir from murder charges by paying a bribe of Tk 21 crore to Baba. The bribery came to light after CID started investigation into the murder.

BABAR-TARIQUE
Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque yesterday directed the jail authorities to produce Babar, Tarique and Abu Sufian before the court on May 20 in connection with a Tk 21 crore bribery case.

The court also asked authorities concerned to publish an advertisement in two national dailies asking Basundhara Group Chairman Shah Alam and four fugitives to appear before it on the same day.

The others are former BNP lawmaker Qazi Saleemul Huq, Shah Alam’s two sons Sanvir and Sadaat Sobhan, and Tarique’s personal secretary Mia Nur Uddin Apu.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted the charge sheet against the accused to the CMM’s Court, showing 45 people as prosecution witnesses on May 6.

The case was filed against against Babar and others with Ramna Police Station on October 4 last year.
