A court here yesterday sentenced notorious Islami Chhatra Shibir cadre Mohammad Nasir alias Shibir Nasir to 17 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) in an arms case filed in 1992.
Chittagong Second Additional Metro Sessions Judge Ekramul Haque Chowdhury handed down the verdict in the morning.
The court also gave the same punishment to Md Oli Ullah, close accomplice of Nasir and other accused in the case.
This is the first case out of 35 criminal cases against Nasir in which he is convicted.
Nasir appeared quite calm at the courtroom when the judgement was being pronounced, sources said. He refused to talk to reporters later when he was being taken away.
Once the top criminal in the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) list, Nasir has been behind bars since March 1998.
Police arrested Nasir with a Pakistan-made revolver and six bullets on July 11, 1992 during a raid on Hotel Al Madina in city’s Chawk Bazar area under Kotwali Police Station. The law enforcers also held Md Oli Ullah at that time.
On October 28 the same year, police submitted the charge sheet in the case accusing the two and charges were framed against them on June 15, 1997.
Among a dozen important prosecution witnesses (PWs), statements of six, including a magistrate, were recorded in the case.
Nasir has been accused in a total of 35 cases, including murder, since late eighties, but none of the witnesses in those cases appeared before the court since 1990 to give their depositions fearing reprisal by his gang, sources said.
As a result, he got released in most of the cases, they added.
Judge Ekramul on April 28 this year fixed yesterday for delivery of judgment after the completion of arguments of both sides.
