Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Motiur Rahman Nizami yesterday alleged that the caretaker government is not taking proper initiatives for the electoral reform dialogue with political parties and is rather making a fresh move to arrest political leaders.

“There has been a move to create a vacuum in the country’s leadership through depoliticisation,” Nizami said yesterday–just a day after the Anti-Corruption Commission pressed charges against him and others in the Gatco graft case.

“So far as I came to know, a process is underway for arresting me. But I am not worried about myself. I have not committed any corruption…I am worried about the country and its people,” he read out from a written speech at a press conference held at the party head office.

He demanded release of all political leaders arrested since the declaration of the state of emergency, including Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Nizami alleged that the present caretaker government is making many policy level decisions–which is unconstitutional–although its lone duty is nothing but conducting the general elections.

He criticised the chief adviser, saying, “In his speech, the chief adviser raised many issues beyond his jurisdiction, putting the dialogue process to uncertainty.”

In reply to a question, Nizami said the government did not show any willingness for holding the dialogue.

He also blamed the government for failing to “successfully” face the crises caused by cyclone Sidr and floods last year.

On corruption, Nizami said corruption has not reduced, rather many claims that it has increased.

Without naming any particular group, he said the state-run radio and television have been promoting a “particular group”.

Nizami presented 13 recommendations, including release of Hasina and Khaleda and withdrawal of the Gatco and Barapukuria graft cases, for handing over power to an elected government.

He also recommended completing the voter list by June 30 and holding the general elections within October this year. He proposed leaving the local government elections for the next elected government.

He also recommended allocating highest subsidy for the food sector.

Asked who would be the party chief and if Jamaat will join the dialogue if he is arrested, Nizami said they are yet to take any decision in this regard.
