A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced former post and telecommunications minister barrister Aminul Haque to 10 years’ imprisonment on charges of amassing illegal wealth and concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Judge Tanzina Ismail of Special Court-6 set up at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises also fined him Tk 1 lakh. He will have to serve three months more in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

The court also ordered the authorities to confiscate his illegal wealth worth over Tk 66 lakh.

Aminul was handed down 7 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) for accumulating illegal wealth and 3 years’ simple jail for suppressing information in the wealth statement submitted to the ACC.

As he is absconding, his sentence will come into effect from the day of his arrest or surrender.

ACC Deputy Director Syed Ahmed filed the case against the former minister with Ramna Police Station on December 12 last year.

In the case statement, the complainant said that Aminul Haque built two houses in Dhaka and Rajshahi while he was a minister. In his wealth statement to the ACC, Aminul said that Tk 54 lakh had been spent for constructing the houses, but the ACC investigation found that the expenditure was Tk 1.08 crore and Tk 66 lakh of the money was illegal.

A court in Rajshahi last year sentenced Aminul to 31 years and six months, along with 24 others, for aiding and abetting militants.
