Intelligence men spotted another Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (Desa) official who reportedly owns real estate, bank balance and share certificates worth over Tk 20 crore, fortunes that hardly agree with his known sources of income.
Mohammad Mujibur Rahman, a sub-divisional engineer with Desa, owns a five-storey building on a 6.48 decimal land in the city’s East Manipur under Kafrul Police Station, said intelligence sources adding that he also possesses 400 decimals of land in his native Bakerganj upazila in Barisal.
Besides having share certificates worth crores of taka, he has stashed away a staggering amount of money in different bank accounts, said the sources.
Engr Mujibur, however, said he is not the only owner of the lands in Bakerganj and that the plot in East Manipur was bought 12 years ago, at a price way lower than today’s real-state prices. He said he took bank loan to construct the five-storey building.
An anti-corruption taskforce has been working on unearthing corruption in Desa since October last year. All Desa staffers, numbering around 4,500, have submitted their wealth statements to the corruption-busters since then.
Sources said the taskforce has found huge amount of ill-gotten assets belonging to Desa officials and employees.
Intelligence officials earlier unearthed the corruption of a Desa clerk who allegedly owns property worth around a staggering Tk 40 crore including a six-storey building, a flat, over 50 bighas of land, savings certificates and businesses.
Engr Mujibur, who joined Desa in 1986 and is now serving with its Sales and Supply Department 5, allegedly made money through fake bill payments against phoney work orders.
He, however, denied all the allegations when talking to this correspondent.
He claimed he and his wife have assets worth Tk 56 lakh which he reported to the taskforce in his wealth statement in December, adding that he has no wealth beyond this and his children also do not have any bank accounts.
The Desa engineer said he purchased the plot in Dhaka 12 years ago at the cost of Tk 6 lakh, adding that he took out bank loan to construct the five-storey building. Prices of construction materials were much lower at the time, he said.
“In my statement, I’ve mentioned the 400 decimals of land in my village. But I don’t own the land alone as my brothers, uncles and aunts are also owners of these lands”, he said.
