Tagar, one of the four criminals who escaped from Chuadanga district prison last week, was killed in a shootout between the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and his cohorts at Patikabari village in sadar upazila in Kushtia district early yesterday.
The criminal, Asiqur Rahman Tagar, 32, was earlier arrested from a hideout in Uttara of the capital city Wednesday morning and brought to Kushtia for interrogation.
He is linked with the outlawed Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF) and also is the leader Tagar Bahini, a gang named after him, which is active in several southwestern districts.
According to a Rab press briefing in Kushtia yesterday, during his interrogation Tagar revealed information about a hidden den in Patikabari area where he hides his arms and ammunition and from where some of his accomplices work.
A Rab team raided the area at about 4:15am with Tagar to recover the arms and arrest the named criminals.
During the raid Tagar’s accomplices from GMF shot at the elite force and a half-hour long gun battle ensued. Tagar was shot when he tried to escape from the police van while the other GMF cadres managed to flee.
Tagar was rushed to the Kushtia General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead at about 5:30am.
The top criminal hailed from Housing Estate area of Kushtia town, and is an accused in 13 cases including four for murder. He was arrested in 2002 and the Chuadanga Judges Court sentenced him to to 50 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in 2005.
He was also known as BNP cadre close to a former lawmaker in the district.
The three other criminals who escaped from prison on May 16 are Aktaruzzaman Sohag, Abdul Hamid and Jorap Ali alias Bachchu. Of them, Abdul Hamid was arrested at Chaighoria village in Chuadanga on May 17.
He was also shot when he tried to escape from police custody and is now under treatment.
Meanwhile law enforcers are continuing their efforts to trace down the remaining two escapees.
Superintendent of police Chuadanga Mafiz Uddin told reporters yesterday that the police is determined to arrest the criminals.
The government has in the meantime beefed up security systems in all 16 jails in Khulna and Barisal divisions.
The numbers of guards in those prisons have also been increased. More police have been deployed at different jails while police patrols have also been increased.
