Leaders of the pro-reform BNP faction expect detained Chairperson Khaleda Zia, scheduled to appear before a court today, would give them the nod to make a dignified return to the fold.

They however have decided to observe the death anniversary of late President Ziaur Rahman on May 30 on their own if the factions fail to reunite by that time.

The decision came at a dissident group meeting behind closed doors yesterday. Some 40 former BNP lawmakers attended the meeting chaired by Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, acting secretary general appointed by the standing committee.

Talking to reporters afterwards, Major Hafiz said they are on course to patch things up with the pro-Khaleda faction led by Khandaker Delwar Hossain.

“There’s no alternative to unity. We hope all BNP leaders will unite by May 30 to observe the death anniversary of our leader Ziaur Rahman,” he observed.

At the meeting held at a Gulshan residence, the pro-reform leaders discussed the status of reunification move and the overall political situation including the ongoing dialogue between the government and political parties.

Insiders said most the participants blamed Khandaker Delwar Hossain, the chairperson-appointed secretary general, for creating obstacles to reuniting the party.

Asked about decisions at the meeting, standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman told The Daily Star last night, “We hope the chairperson will take note of the present circumstances and give the signal to unify the party.”

He said they believe she would nod in favour of unity when she would be produced before court for twice this week including today.

Asked whether they would attend the talks with the government if the unity move fails to succeed, he said, “We will take the decision in consultation with the party colleagues. Besides, we might have to take our cue from other major political parties.”

The caretaker government has invited both the factions to the dialogue.

Former BNP ministers Osman Faruk, Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Prof Rejaul Karim, advisers to the chairperson Major Gen (retd) ZA Khan, former lawmakers Abdul Alim, Sarder Shakhawat Hossain Bakul, Nazir Hossain, Musharraf Hossain Mangu, Rustam Ali Farazi and Zahiruddin Swapan, among others, were present at the meeting.
