Most of the political parties have strongly criticised the government move to set up Truth and Accountability Commission (TAC), saying that it will create a dual system in curbing corruption.

In their reaction yesterday, the political leaders also demanded that the government scrap the plan to establish the commission.

Talking to The Daily Star, Awami League (AL) presidium member Suranjit Sengupta said that the decision to set up such a commission should have taken earlier.

“Formation of the Truth and Accountability Commission so late would neither benefit the corrupt nor the politicians,” Suranjit told The Daily Star.

The former lawmaker also termed the TAC as “Truth-less commission,” adding, “The commission won’t bring any positive result to anyone.”

BNP standing committee appointed acting secretary general Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, however, welcomed the move to form the commission.

“Businesspersons who refrained from investment will now start investing in different sectors,” Maj (retd) Hafiz said, adding that Truth and Accountability Commission will bring a positive impact to the country’s economy.

In his reaction, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haq Inu said that the commission will introduce a dual system in fighting corruption.

“The Truth and Accountability Commission will create controversy, as some corrupt people will be fined and some will be showed mercy,” the JSD president said adding that the drive against corruption should be left to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

He urged the government to rethink before implementing the TAC.

Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon and General Secretary Bimal Biswas in a joint reaction said that formation of TAC has raised questions over government’s sincerity about anti-corruption drive.

“Government’s dual policy on anti-corruption drive has been revealed through the formation of the Truth and Accountability Commission,” the Workers Party leaders said.

“There is hide-and-seek in the entire matter of the commission,” they observed, adding that corrupt people will manage to escape through the commission.

The Workers Party leaders demanded cancellation of the plan to form TAC.

Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) in its reaction said that TAC has been planned to save the high profile corrupts.

Comrade Khalequzzaman, convenor, BSD central committee, said, the corrupt and their collaborators must be given exemplary punishment to establish justice in the society.

He demanded that the government scrap the plan and try all corrupt people impartially.

Democratic Left Alliance, a coalition of 11 left leaning political parties in its reaction said, the government wants to re-establish corrupt people in the society in the name of Truth and Accountability Commission.

The cabinet on Sunday approved formation of the TAC, providing corruption suspects with an avenue to avoid imprisonment in exchange for confessions and surrender of their illegally earned wealth or the equivalent amount in cash to the state.
