The Awami League (AL) starts a campaign today for collecting signatures across the country, except for the capital, to press home its six-point demand including release of detained former premier and party chief Sheikh Hasina.
The campaign will continue throughout this month and after collecting signatures the AL will submit those to the upazila and district administration concerned.
“Our mass signature collecting campaign is for preparing the ground for the movement to press home our demands,” AL Commerce and Industry Secretary Col (retd) Faruk Khan told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, the AL today observes the historic Six-Point Day, the day the country’s war of liberation actually began.
To mark the day, the party will hoist the national and party flags at all its offices at 5:30am and place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Road-32 in Dhanmondi at 8:00am.
A discussion will be held at the party central office on Bangabandhu Avenue at 3:30pm with acting AL President Zillur Rahman in the chair. Renowned intellectuals and national leaders will address the discussion.
AL acting General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam urged all like-minded people, including leaders and workers of the party and its front organisations, to observe the day with due respect.
Jatiya Gonotantrik League and Prakton Chhatra League Foundation will also observe the day.
